• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Leah -- A must read book : Have you ever read a book that you cannot put down even though you feel sleepy? It’s because the attention has been captured! This is what happens when persons begin to read Gwen Ehrenborg's book, Our Church Mothers. Ehrenborg does not only let these women share their lives with us via a letter format style, but she incorporates a description of the times these women lived and forged their lives as leaders. Since the author has done extensive research, this book can be used as a text in seminary or college religion courses. Nevertheless, it is excellent for use in church settings like small groups or book clubs because the writing is not overly academic. Readers learn how difficult it was to be a leader amid the obstacles these featured ladies faced, but yet they persisted and now serve as role models for today's women. Gwen Ehrenborg is well qualified to write about these historical women of God. Her live performances of these women can be felt in the way the book is written (it's as if she were speaking to us in person). If you don't know anything about the character, Rev. Gwen has included an introduction of historical information. The letter part of the chapter then gets us intimately acquainted with the character and her life. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from D Davis -- Fascinating, well written stories of seven women in history that were powerfully used by God. : I have known the author, Gwen Ehrenborg, since I was a teenager and a student at the American School of Kinshasa in the Congo. She volunteered at the hostel (dorm), where I stayed in the city to get my education. She had a big influence on my life spiritually at that time, but I lost touch with her over the years. One special day, 45 years later, my husband and I were walking along the beach in Washington State and Gwen and her husband Todd were coming from the opposite direction. The Lord’s hand was in it and we made a wonderful reconnection after almost a lifetime. The Ehrenborgs were now living in our neighborhood. They were both ordained ministers and had been performing monologue presentations of outstanding faithful women through history. We were delighted to see numerous of these plays, in which Gwen portrayed women such as Katie Luther and Mary mother of Jesus. Their stories were enthralling and inspirational. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Wesley Hunt -- Her stories are vibrant and colorful while being grounded in historical facts. : I was excited to be given the opportunity to read an early copy of this book having worked as a technician supporting Gwen Ehrenborg’s live performances of these women over many years and in multiple counties. I wasn’t asked to give a review, I’m happy to do so. Her performances engaged live audiences and effected them profoundly. I was curious to see how a theatrical presentation would translate to the written form and I am happy to report, extremely well. The live performance only gave her one hour to tell each woman’s story, but the book goes much deeper. Her clear love of these historical leaders shines through. A few paragraphs draw the reader into the story and it comes to life. I could almost hear, smell and see the world of these unique women as they shared their life stories passionately and without compromise. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2020 )
• 5.0 out of 5 stars from David -- Wonderful Book That Brings These People Into Your Life : I have just finished reading an extraordinary book called, Our Church Mothers, Letters from Leaders at Crossroads in History, by Rev. Gwen Ehrenborg. I have heard of all the women Rev. Gwen writes about in history books; Judge Deborah, Mary, the Mother of Jesus, St. Clare of Assisi, Katie Luther and many others. The difference today is these women came alive, jump off the pages I was reading and seemed to be speaking to me personally. I sipped my coffee and listened to each of the women speak. Some of their stories caused tears to form in my eyes. This experience has changed my head and heart. The book is a beautiful addition to my library, and I encourage you to add it to yours. The messages of the world tell her she can do anything her male counterpart can do, but often such messages have not really answered that deep longing for fulfilment as a woman. She is in desperate need of role models. Gwen has taken seven women out of the pages of scripture and history and brought them to life in personal and sometimes intimate letters to the reader. Their stories tell of women who trusted in God and stepped out with bold actions leading to even bolder results. By trusting in His leading they not only found personal fulfillment, but their lives have become a testimony of what a Spirit led woman can be.
